The Importance of Creativity and Art in the Corporate Workspace

Fostering a vibrant and creative business culture is SO IN!

Our world today is vastly different from what it was as little as 5 years ago. We are becoming more advanced in technology and artificial intelligence, and in return, this is creating a much more fast-paced environment as productivity has ultimately taken center stage. This has put art and creativity on the backburner, and it has really become an overlooked entity in the general business environment. However, what we are seeming to forget as of late, is that incorporating these elements into a workspace in not merely an aesthetic choice; it can significantly enhance productivity, foster better problem-solving, and spur innovation. Understanding and leveraging the power of creativity and art can transform the work environment and drive business success.

What do you think about when you imagine a corporate environment? Do you think about cubicles, neutral tones, and minimalistic designs? Well, I hate to disappoint you, but what that is actually doing is inhibiting productivity and creating stagnation. Studies (such as this one highlighted in the Guardian) prove that having vibrant and enriched workspaces improves productivity, lowers stress, and increases well-being.

Imagine walking into an office adorned with beautiful paintings, sculptures, or even creative installations. The mere presence of art can inspire a sense of calm and positivity, creating an atmosphere where employees feel valued and appreciated. This enhanced environment can lead to better focus, higher job satisfaction, and ultimately, improved performance. So, in other words: This means happier, more motivated and engaged staff, and therefore, happier clients!

When it comes to picking the art and vibrance that you want for your space, consider local artists. Why? You will be supporting your local economy for one, but also, those artists could become future clients and referral points for your business, creating a cyclical professional relationship.

Another important point to know is that creativity is not just for artists! Fostering creativity can lead to innovative solutions and problem-solving, as well as create new groundbreaking ideas to help your business grow! When employees are encouraged to “think outside the box”, they are more likely to come up with novel approaches to solving problems, feeling more engaged in the company’s efforts. Art in the workplace can act as a catalyst for this kind of creative thinking.

But we don’t have to stop there! Art can also play a significant role in enhancing collaboration and team dynamics! Creating team-building activities such as workshops that involve creative projects harbour a sense of cooperation and community, as well as break down barriers, encourage open communication and build stronger relationships within the team. When employees feel connected, they are more likely to collaborate effectively and contribute to the team’s success in future business projects. This can also help reduce stress and prevent burnout, which results in a more resilient and productive team.

To break all this down, here are some practical steps for involving art and creativity into your workplace:

  • Introduce rotating art (whether it be sculptures, paintings, or other visual pieces) in common areas and meeting rooms. Having this rotate means there will be fresh perspectives and consistent vibrance.

  • Create creative spaces. These can be informal spaces with comfortable seating that contains art supplies and inspirational materials that employees can use on their breaks. You could even feature their art in some spaces as well!

  • Organize regular/semi-regular workshops or events that are focused on creativity.

Integrating a sense of creativity and personal expression doesn't have to be complicated or expensive. It just takes a little time and effort to establish, but in return, you will foster a more dynamic, vibrant, communicative, and innovative company that will have a big boost in employee morale and productivity.
